NewcastleGateshead’s award-winning festival for children and young people makes a welcome return this October half-term for 12 days of performance, comedy, poetry (and pumpkins) in venues, attractions and open air spaces across NewcastleGateshead.
Taking place from Wednesday 19 – Sunday 30 October 2011, expect inspiring events for children of all ages and abilities.
Highlights in this year’s programme include:
- Becoming ArtSunday 30 October, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead
Widely recognised as one of the most important and prestigious awards for the visual arts in Europe, The Turner Prize will be hosted at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead in October.
In response to the Turner Prize Exhibition, Blah Blah Blah (BALTIC’s Teen Panel) will create an interactive event in and around BALTIC, to spark discussion with other young people about the four shortlisted Turner Prize artists.
- Dance Please! – an interactive playground of movement, light and soundFriday 28 – Sun 30 October, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead
Play with rhythms and re-mix sounds just by shaking your feet. Splash wild colours across the room and spin crazy shapes by wiggling a finger. Come inside a digital world of magical animations and spectacular sounds created by Italy’s leading children’s theatre company, TPO.
- The Rememberers – a live action graphic novel written and performed by Kenny BarakaWednesday 26 – Friday 28 October, Northern Stage, Newcastle
A classic tale of good versus evil told through rap narration, lyrics, projection, music and graphic novel illustration.
Join Kia – leader of the Found, guardian of The Remembers – as he tells the story of 16yr old 7’s discovery that she holds the key to humankind’s future. Earth’s vital signs are weakening and The Rememberers can wait no longer to battle against the sinister NorCon corporation.
Now in its fourth year, Juice continues to deliver a programme of events that celebrate the creativity of children and young people.
Rachel Adam, Director of Juice Festival said: “For 12 days, NewcastleGateshead focuses on the creativity of children and young people. The festival commissions work by young people as well as presenting work by leading artists working with children and young people. The breadth of events and performances reflect the varied age range of the festival which caters for newborns to young adults and everyone in between.”
