Hidden speakeasy to open in NewcastleGateshead

Famous for its nightlife, NewcastleGateshead welcomes a new and very different pop-up bar in the shape of the EAT! Speakeasy, a prohibition-style drinking den that’s only open for one week.

Part of EAT! NewcastleGateshead, the annual food festival produced by NewcastleGateshead Initiative, access to the secret speakeasy will only be granted to those that can solve the following riddle; ‘In the place where penguins are in the NEWS it’s 50 years since little Eva did train to sing behind Bob’s shop.’

With drinks served in teacups and guests encouraged to dress-up, the temporary bar has a real 1920s feel.

A series of special events helps visitors to the EAT! Speakeasy appreciate the taste, skill and expertise that goes into every drop of alcohol.  It’s all about the quality – not the quantity.

Simon Preston, Festival Director of EAT! NewcastleGateshead said: “The EAT! Speakeasy celebrates the stories behind some of the most famous and iconic drinks made right here in the North East and around the world.

“We’re bringing the best local mixologists and bartenders together to give the public a real appreciation for the art of making the perfect drink.”

The EAT! Late Launch Party (Sat 13 July, £15 incl cocktail) sees guest bartenders from NewcastleGateshead’s best bars reveal some of the secrets of their cocktail making skills.  Prohibition-style dress is encouraged for the opening night of the EAT! Speakeasy.

The EAT! Speakeasy Masterclasses (Sat 14-Wed 18 July, £15/£20) are perfect for those who have ever wondered how to make a classic rum Mojito or if there’s more to Tequila than a Margarita.  Wayne Collins from TV’s ‘Something for the Weekend’ will be leading a workshop on classic cocktails.  Watch the drinks being mixed, find out how they were invented – taste them, obviously – and pick up insider tips on how and when to serve them.

A perfect companion to the popular EAT!-a-long-Movies which are taking place again this year, the EAT! Speakeasy presents two Drink-a-long-Movies (Fri 20 & Sat 21 July).  Enjoy some wine-tasting with the classic film, Sideways, and sample some famous cocktails at a screening of Casablanca.  Drinks will be served at the same time they appear in the film, with gourmet pies and popcorn also available.

The EAT! Speakeasy opens from Friday 13 July – Saturday 21 July as part of this year’s EAT! NewcastleGateshead food festival.  Tickets for all events at the EAT! Speakeasy can be purchased from www.eatnewcastlegateshead.com or from the Theatre Royal Newcastle Box Office on 08448 11 21 21.

EAT! NewcastleGateshead (13-29 July) – produced by NewcastleGateshead Initiative – celebrates its sixth year in 2012 with an ambitious programme of events that make “the hipster capital of the northeast” one of the most popular city break destinations this Olympic year.
