LNER serves up iconic dishes from the past

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is proud to announce delectable new dishes to its First Class menu, as its centenary celebrations continue.

The 100th anniversary menu showcases some of the iconic dishes from LNER’s history, with modern interpretations. LNER’s catering teams worked closely alongside celebrated local suppliers and talented chefs to create enticing meals, continuing the tradition of providing first class catering for customers using the East Coast route.

Just as they did a century ago, LNER’s chefs freshly prepare the dishes in the trains’ onboard kitchens, and from Wednesday 24 May 2023, customers in First Class can enjoy carefully crafted new additions that reflect LNER’s proud past, including:

  • Beef olives stew, a modern variation on a dish served on LNER trains in 1923, the original being stuffed parcels of sliced beef, with its shape giving the dish its name. LNER’s modern interpretation, which is gluten free, is a beef stew with bacon, carrots and mushrooms served in rich red wine sauce with herb-infused new potatoes.

  • Coronation chicken brioche roll, combining tender chicken with creamy curried mayonnaise on a bed of fresh spinachleaves in a brioche roll studded with Nigella seeds. The dish, originally created to mark the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, also celebrates the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III earlier this month.

  • Apple tart – the return of a classic, with sliced apple in sweet frangipane in a golden pastry case. Apple Flan was served on LNER trains 100 years ago, and this provides a modern twist on a firm favourite.

Richard Judge, Head of Customer Experience at LNER, said: “For a century, LNER has prided itself on ensuring that our customers enjoy unrivalled excellence in our onboard catering. These dishes are ‘oldies but goodies’ from our past and, with the modern interpretation our chefs and local suppliers have brought to them, they’re a fantastic and timely addition to the new menus we introduced in January. We really hope everyone enjoys our new dishes.”

LNER is proud to support local suppliers from Scotland, North East England, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and London, all of whom have been hand-picked for the quality of their produce and locally sourced ingredients, as well as their responsible approach.

As part of LNER’s legendary customer experience, three complimentary menus, Dine, Dish or Deli, offer customers in First Class a wider choice, with menus varying depending on which service they are travelling on.

Hot sandwiches, including vegan options, overnight oats and a speciality salad bowl also feature on the Dine and Dish menus, along with a variety of hot and cold beverages. For customers enjoying the Deli offer, a range of sandwiches, sausage rolls, snacks, biscuits and sweet treats are available as part of the complimentary catering offer in First Class. Customers in Standard can also sample a variety of produce through LNER’s at seat service ‘Let’s Eat At Your Seat’ and at the café bar.

Customers can find out which menu will be offered on their service when booking direct on the LNER website or app.
