Nearly a year to the day since the Great Exhibition of the North programme was launched, NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI) has won an award at the Northumberland and Tyneside Business Awards 2019 thanks to its work on the project.
The team picked up the Tourism & Hospitality Award, beating off strong competition from Newcastle United Football Club and Northumberland National Park.
NGI picked up the award after a successful 2018 which saw the organisation lead on the delivery of the Great Exhibition of the North, the largest event in England.
Festivals and major sporting and cultural events are recognised as a major contributor to the tourism economy and Great Exhibition of the North demonstrated NGI’s ability to deliver events on a scale not seen in the region before.
Building on the success of 2018, in 2019, NGI is a key delivery partner of the European Professional Cup Rugby Finals and lead delivery partner on the World Transplant Games.
NGI now goes through to the regional final in May to compete against winners from the Durham and Teesside heats.
