One of the UK’s largest housebuilders has teamed up with Gateshead College to equip young people with the skills they need for a career in construction. It comes at a pivotal time when the industry is facing significant skills shortages in its future workforce.

The partnership will provide hands-on opportunities for students in the region, supporting the local community and building a skilled workforce. It aims to provide students with practical experience and careers advice to prepare them for entering the sector.

Taylor Wimpey North East’s production team will regularly visit Gateshead College to share their expertise, offering a real-world perspective on the industry skills required. Students enrolled in courses such as bricklaying, joinery and plumbing will benefit from workshops, presentations and feedback sessions, helping to ensure they are learning skills that meet the needs of the industry today. As a key employer in the North East, Taylor Wimpey also provides apprenticeship opportunities giving students a route directly from the classroom to the construction site.

David Abercrombie, Technical Director and Chair of the Young Persons Forum at Taylor Wimpey NorthEast, said: “This partnership is a great example of how we’re committed to building strong relationships within our community and giving back in a meaningful and impactful way. We don’t just build homes; we aim to build futures by creating employment pathways and supporting social mobility within the North East. Working closely with Gateshead College, their teaching staff and students, allows us to help shape the next generation of skilled professionals who will contribute positively to our local economy and communities.”

Partnerships like this are crucial for addressing the skills shortage in the construction industry, particularly in the North East, where demand for skilled labour continues to rise. By working collaboratively with training providers, employers can directly influence learning programmes to ensure they align with industry needs.

John Deary, Assistant Principal for Construction at Gateshead College, said: “We’re delighted to partner with Taylor Wimpey North East. Our focus has always been on equipping our students with skills that employers need and this partnership is a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain direct insight into the modern-day demands of the construction industry.

“It also highlights our commitment to addressing skill gaps and developing a new generation of talent ready to thrive in the sector. From specialist trade courses to professional-level upskilling programmes, Gateshead College offers comprehensive pathways for students and professionals to progress their careers and contribute to the industry’s future growth.”
