Gerry & Sewell is back – bigger, belter and more black and white
12th August 2025

As excitement builds for the new Premier League season, Tyneside audiences have another reason to celebrate: Gerry & Sewell, Olivier award winning Jamie Eastlake’s hit stage adaptation of Jonathan Tulloch’s novel The Season Ticket, is making a triumphant return to Newcastle Theatre Royal in 2026 (Tue 9 – Sat 13 Jun 2026).
Following its sensational, sell-out run last year, Gerry & Sewell is back by popular demand – and it’ll be bigger, belter, and more black-and-white than ever when it storms back onto the Newcastle Theatre Royal stage next year!
The iconic Grey Street venue was transformed into a sea of black and white in 2024 when Gerry & Sewell enjoyed a week-long sell-out run. Their promotion to the city’s biggest stage followed two sell out runs at Laurels Theatre in Whitley Bay in 2022 and a stint at Live Theatre in 2023.
Gerry & Sewell is a tale rooted in the North East. Adapted by Olivier Award-winning Jamie Eastlake from Jonathan Tulloch’s beloved novel The Season Ticket – which inspired the cult Geordie film Purely Belter – this raw, funny and heart-filled production tells the story of two Gateshead lads, Gerry and Sewell, and their mission to secure season tickets to watch their beloved Toon.
With nowt but each other, their wits, and the dream of standing in St James’ Park, the pair will stop at nothing to make their dream a reality – dodging radgie charvers, the social, and the odd madcap scrap merchant on the way. This is a story of hope and heartbreak that will resonate
with anyone from the region and beyond. Whether you bleed black and white, red and white, or aren’t a fan at all, this is a story about far more than football.
The returning cast features audience favourites Dean Logan and Jack Robertson as the unforgettable Gerry and Sewell, with Becky Clayburn starring as Tyneside, and Erin Mullen reprising her powerful performance as Bridget McCarten. The show also features live music, puppet dogs, and the phenomenal support of Wor Flags in a production that is bold, hilarious, and proudly Geordie to its core.
Marianne Locatori, Chief Executive at Newcastle Theatre Royal, said: “Our region is rich in storytelling and creativity, we’re proud to bring this incredible local production back to our stage, performed by a phenomenal cast of North East talent.
“Gerry & Sewell is the kind of theatre that resonates deeply; productions like this remind us that theatre can be authentic, accessible, heartfelt and inclusive, whilst giving voice to experiences and communities that are too often underrepresented on our stages. This is a show that speaks to different generations, to football fans and non-fans alike, and we’re thrilled to champion a story so deeply rooted in the region”
Jamie Eastlake said: “The reaction to the lads’ story has been unbelievable. We can’t wait to return to Newcastle Theatre Royal to turn the auditorium into a sea of black and white, and to share Gerry and Sewell’s story once again. This one’s for the Toon. And for anyone who’s ever chased something that matters.”
Gerry & Sewell plays Newcastle Theatre Royal (Tue 9 – Sat 13 Jun 2025).
