The curtain is rising on an exciting new season at Newcastle Theatre Royal, as a dazzling line-up of world-class productions, beloved classics and unmissable live entertainment heads to the iconic Grey Street venue.

From gripping drama and spectacular dance to award-winning opera and unforgettable musicals, there is something for everyone.

Drama lovers are in for a treat with The Anastasia File (Tue 15 – Sat 19 Sept), a thrilling, moving drama based on the true story of Anne Manahan whose thirty-year battle for recognition as the last surviving Romanov was one of the most popular historical mysteries of the twentieth century. Agatha Christie’s The Hollow (Tue 10 – Sat 14 Nov) offers a masterclass in suspense from the Queen of Crime. Filled with twists, secrets and sharp social observation, audiences can join renowned detective Hercule Poirot as he navigates a treacherous web of desire, jealousy and betrayal.

Newcastle Theatre Royal also continues its commitment to nurturing the next generation of North East talent through Project A, its full-time, year-long actor training programme for young people aged 18–25. Audiences will have the opportunity to celebrate the region’s rising stars when Project A participants present their end-of-year production POSH by Laura Wade (Tue 7 – Fri 11 Jul), a sharp, satirical drama that follows the boys of the Riot Club as they have their annual dinner in the private dining room of an Oxford pub.

Opera returns in spectacular style as Opera North brings a stunning quartet of productions to the Theatre Royal stage. Audiences can experience the passion and tragedy of Rigoletto (Wed 4 & Fri 6 Nov) in Femi Elufowoju Jr’s bold, award-winning production, and the sweeping romance of Eugene Onegin (Sat 7 Nov) in Tchaikovsky’s profoundly moving study of love and loss. Alessandro Talevi’s eclectic, time-travelling production of Don Giovanni (Wed 10 & Fri 12 Mar 2027) brings a fresh perspective of Mozart’s darkest, craziest opera. Finally, the powerful contemporary opera Dead Man Walking (Sat 13 Mar 2027) from Jake Heggie, based on the Oscar-winning film of the same name, follows a death row inmate in his final days. Together, they showcase Opera North’s renowned artistry and storytelling at its finest.

Dance audiences can look forward to a magical reimagining of a classic as Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella (Tue 20 Apr – Sat 1 May 2027) takes to the stage, blending breathtaking choreography with cinematic storytelling in his signature style. Returning to mark the 30th anniversary of one of New Adventures’ most popular and beloved productions, audiences can experience a thrilling and evocative love story, set in London during the Second World War.

Musical theatre fans can also look forward to the electrifying Grease (Mon 10 – Sat 15 May 2027) as this timeless high-school romance, packed with iconic songs, returns to Newcastle, promising a feel-good night of nostalgia and high energy.

Two major additional productions also join the programme. The Olivier Award-winning comedy A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong (Tue 23 – Sat 27 Feb 2027) delivers chaos and laugh-out-loud mayhem from the creators of The Play That Goes Wrong. Following a sold out run at London’s Apollo Theatre, don’t miss this disastrous take on the much-loved classic Ebenezer Scrooge.

Meanwhile, the smash-hit musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie arrives (Mon 19 – Sat 24 Jul 2027) and tells the inspiring true story of a teenager chasing his dreams against the odds. This funny, outrageous, touching musical sensation is perfect for the whole family and not to be missed!
