Alnwick Castle is set to throw open its gates to culture lovers this summer, promising an unforgettable season of performances, stories, and spectacle in an iconic setting. With an impressive schedule of literary talks, outdoor theatre and open-air cinema, the Northumberland stronghold is reaffirming its place as a major destination for arts and heritage in the North East, as well as the ideal visitor attraction for families, couples and solo culture-hunters.

The celebrated summer book talk series returns with major appearances from leading voices in British history and culture. The renowned art historian and BBC presenter Dr Bendor Grosvenor discusses his new book, The Invention of British Art, this Saturday, 10 May, reflecting on how our small island developed such a distinctive visual identity.

With the Castle having recently opened its Victorian kitchens to the public for the very first time, prolific food historian Annie Gray joins the archival team on Friday 13 June to delve into rare material from the Castle’s extensive kitchen records. Annie will also be presenting her new book, The Bookshop, The Draper, The Candlestick Maker, a vivid journey through the history of Britain’s high street.

Tudor history enthusiasts will be thrilled by the return of bestselling historian and novelist Alison Weir, who will discuss her latest novel, The Cardinal: The Secret Life of Thomas Wolsey, on Wednesday 9 July.

“I am delighted to have been asked to speak at Alnwick Castle again,” said Alison. “It’s always a great privilege to do literary events in historic locations, but Alnwick is very special because of its long history and unique heritage, which have drawn me back on several occasions. It is simply one of Britain’s greatest stately homes – and I’m thrilled to be playing a small part in its story.”

Finally, Tracy Borman comes to the Castle on Tuesday 23 September to present her latest book, The Stolen Crown: Treachery, Deceit and the Death of the Tudor Dynasty. Tracy will reveal the shocking truth behind one of history’s best kept secrets, when King James VI of Scotland succeeded to the English throne after the death of Elizabeth I, in a revelatory new look at Tudor intrigue and the battle for dynastic survival.

Each talk is set within the Castle’s atmospheric State Rooms and includes the opportunity for audience Q&A and book signings.

Also scheduled this season is a special outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by the award-winning musical theatre troupe The Three-Inch Fools, taking place on Tuesday 22 July.

Known for their vibrant, fast-paced renditions of Shakespearean classics, the group will bring the bard’s much-loved comedy to life in the Castle’s spectacular grounds. Audiences are encouraged to bring blankets, picnics, and a sense of humour for a memorable summer evening.

Outdoor cinema returns to the North East this summer, with the Castle set to transform into a unique open-air cinema in collaboration with Adventure Cinema from Thursday 31 July to Sunday 3 August. Set against the Castle’s dramatic silhouette, the screenings will include a mix of cult classics and family favourites, including Mama Mia!, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (which includes scenes filmed at the Castle), and Pretty Woman – perfect for the school holidays or romantic nights out.

“This year’s programme celebrates Alnwick Castle’s continuing role as a beacon of culture in the North East,” said Catherine Neil, Head of Alnwick Castle Ventures. “Whether you’re a literature lover, theatre enthusiast, or film fan, we’re inviting audiences to come enjoy our majestic grounds in new and inspiring ways.”
