It’s that time of year again! Newcastle’s annual count-down to Christmas is upon us, with the much-anticipated lights switch on taking place next Thursday – 6 November.

Newcastle City Council is delighted to announce it will be again working with Hits Radio, and welcoming back to the stage the region’s favourite hosts Steve and Karen, who will be entertaining the crowds in their own inimitable style.

It’s the traditional curtain raiser to Christmas in the city, with the fun starting at 6pm, and the big switch-on at 7pm, with the stage in its usual place – at the top of Grey Street, near to the Monument. Everyone is encouraged to get there in good time and to use public transport if possible as the city centre will be very busy.

Steve and Karen will be joined on stage by a whole variety of festive guests and a fun-filled evening for all the family is guaranteed. There will be songs, games, live music, and maybe even a very special visit from the fella in red, all helping to get the crowds into the Christmas spirit.

The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Cllr Henry Gallagher said: “I am delighted to be joining Steve and Karen on stage and to help start the Christmas celebrations in Newcastle.

“Our city is a magical place, at Christmas more than ever, and we have some amazing things planned right across the festive season, including our fantastic Christmas markets and our new New Year’s Eve event – Howaymanay.

“And what better way to kick the festivities off by celebrating with family and friends, enjoying an evening of entertainment and seeing our wonderful lights being switched on.”

Karen Oxley from Hits Radio 90s said: We’re honoured be switching on Christmas in our home city of Newcastle for the 13th year running! We love starting the North East’s countdown to the big day.”

Steve Furnell from Hits Radio 90s added: It’s always a great night that really kickstarts Christmas in the Toon and we can’t wait to be part of it again.”

This year’s Christmas lights switch on is sponsored by the Utilita Arena, Newcastle.
