Gateshead Council has revealed its full plans for a spectacular celebration on Saturday 7 March to mark Gateshead Central Library spending a century at the heart of the community.

The all-day event is being hosted at the library in partnership with the Queen’s Reading Room, a charity launched by Her Majesty Queen Camilla to promote the power of reading.

The jewel in the crown of the big day will be a ‘Meet the Author’ session with best-selling author and one of the UK’s most-loved novelists Peter James. He will be joined by actor Richie Campbell who stars in the hit ITV series Grace, based on James’ books. Residents will get the chance to hear from and put questions to both stars.

There will of course be plenty more to enjoy throughout the day. Storyteller-in-Residence Chris Adriaanse will captivate families with a journey through the enchanting world of folktales and fairytales.

Creative activities for all ages are also on the bill. Residents can get their creative juices flowing through collage-making, illustrating and even designing their own skateboards alongside local artists. There’ll be more hands-on crafting in the MakerPlace, the library’s studio space complete with 3D printers, laser cutters, heat presses and more.

Another addition expected to be popular are tours of the historic building. Locals will get a guided tour exploring the landmark’s architecture and heritage, all whilst learning about some remarkable tales in its past.

The Gateshead Community Choir from Side by Side Arts will also be treating guests to a special musical performance.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Councillor Angela Douglas, shared: “Gateshead Central Library has been part of the fabric of our borough for 100 years. It’s wonderful to mark this milestone with an unforgettable event alongside the Queen’s Reading Room.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and make themselves part of the library’s history.”

Vicki Perrin, Chief Executive of The Queen’s Reading Room, said: “We are delighted to celebrate this remarkable milestone with Gateshead Central Library. For a century, this library has been lighting little fires of curiosity and imagination in its community – exactly the spirit that drives our mission at The Queen’s Reading Room.

“At a time when reading rates are at their lowest, the role of libraries has never been more vital. They are the places where reading comes alive, where people of all ages discover new worlds, find deeper understanding, and forge genuine connections through the power of books. Gateshead Central Library has been doing exactly this for 100 years, and we’re honoured to help celebrate its extraordinary contribution to the community.”
