2025 was a year of remarkable achievements for the North East. Milestone moments put our region firmly on the national and international stage and paved the way for more to come.

Newcastle welcomed not one but two major music ceremonies: the MOBO Awards and the Mercury Prize, with Sam Fender taking home the top honour. His St James’ gigs also generated £17 million for the local economy.

Mercury Prize by Chris Owens for Generator

Travel and film buffs were impressed with, Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later. Shot in our region, it’s inspired visitors from far and wide to explore its stunning filming locations. Enthused sports fans lapped up the Women’s Rugby World Cup opener at the Stadium of Light, while Newcastle celebrated the Magic Weekend’s 18th anniversary at St James’ Park with top Super League clashes.

The S&DR200 festival marked 200 years since the first Stockton & Darlington Railway journey on 27 September 1825. A spectacular open-air show in Bishop Auckland used projections, drones and 100 performers to bring history to life, while Locomotion in Shildon showcased an exhibition of Railway Firsts celebrating S&DR’s pioneering innovation.

Big projects were announcedA £120 million investment will turn Newcastle’s last major brownfield site into a new neighbourhood with up to 2,500 homes. This transformation will bring green spaces, shops and better connections, creating a lively community on the city’s riverside. A £10 billion AI and data centre in Northumberland is set to create thousands of jobs, while the Eastern Green Link will deliver renewable energy to the grid.

Reinforcing how our region leads in innovation, Newcastle University added to the momentum by improving dementia care, helping prevent inherited diseases and creating tools to spot heart and cancer risks early. The university is also cutting carbon with solar panels and biofuel, aiming for net zero by 2030.

Culture and leisure also shone. A wave of new and refurbished venues opened their doors, giving us even more places to enjoy. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the latest additions and upgrades from 2025 that you should check out soon.
