The award winning international design practice, headquartered in Newcastle, has posted its latest annual accounts showing a strong underlying commercial performance, despite the challenging economic environment.

For the financial year ending 30 April 2025, Ryder’s UK turnover was £36m (+14% on 2024), generating pre tax profits of £1m, net of costs associated with the move to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) on 1 May 2025.  Overall Ryder employs 308 people across its UK and international locations.

Mark Thompson, principal and managing director, said: “It’s been a challenging period for businesses across many sectors. Greater employment costs brought about by increases to minimum wages and NIC, and office relocations in London and Liverpool, coupled with general uncertainty leading to the stop start nature of projects, has impacted profitability and growth.

“The transition to an EOT, secures the future of Ryder as an independent, well funded business with an exciting range of projects and new prospects.”

In the period between 1 May 2024 and 30 April 2025, Ryder completed several award winning projects, including Durham University Business School, Highgate East for Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, and the Story in Durham, and was selected to design the University of British Columbia’s largest student housing project to date. It was also crowned Building’s Architectural Practice of the Year for the second time.

Testament to this accolade are the projects that the practice continues to deliver. The regeneration of Pilgrim Street reached several milestones in 2025, with the opening of Hotel Gotham, Worswick Chambers and the practical completion of Pilgrim’s Quarter, which is now in fit out stage ahead of its opening in 2027. Further afield, Ryder was also appointed to design Jamaica’s National Stadium, Independence Park, which will meet FIFA and World Athletics standards.

The next 12 months will see two significant Ryder healthcare projects welcome patients, including the National Rehabilitation Centre in Loughborough, bringing research, innovation, education and training alongside clinical practice to drive excellence in rehabilitation, and Sunderland Eye Infirmary, which brings the nationally recognised hospital into the Riverside Sunderland development.
