People urged to speak up about what makes them proud to be a Geordie
27th January 2026
One of the biggest engagement exercises to take place in Newcastle will launch today with Geordies city-wide being asked what makes them proud of the Toon.
Newcastle’s Big Conversation will begin today and over the next two months residents, workers and visitors to the city will be asked to get involved.
It will see thousands of Tynesiders have a good natter about what makes them proud of the city, what they would change and how they would put Newcastle on the world stage.
Commissioned by Newcastle City Council, the results are expected to form the foundations of the city’s future priorities, with all out local elections in the city taking place in May.
Chief Executive of the City Council, Pam Smith, said the exercise had cross-party support with members in the council chamber – with everyone wanting to give residents a bigger voice.
She said: “In 2025 the city was firmly put on the map with hugely successful events including the Mercury Prize and MOBOs bringing millions to the city economy.
“I was so proud to be connected to the city on those nights in particular and it’s shown the world just a glimpse of what we have to offer.
“Like thousands of others, I fell in love with Newcastle the minute I stepped foot here. There is something special about the city that separates it from anywhere else.
“Beautiful architecture, a strong cultural heartbeat, a great football team and a reputation as a city where every stranger is a friend. How can you not be proud to be a Geordie.
“That will mean different things to different people, being a Geordie. We all have our own emotional connection to this city. All our experiences are different.
“The Big Conversation isn’t about the council consulting on a ready made strategy. We are stepping back and want to see Newcastle have a conversation with itself.
“We want to give you the platform to tell us what you’re proud of, what you want to change, how you think we can go bigger and better than 2025.
“We’ll be out in force to get people involved and will be making it accessible to all so please do get involved. Speak up, shape Newcastle.”
Newcastle’s Big Conversation will see residents, workers and visitors to the city asked five questions through on street surveys, focus groups and an online survey.
The engagement will last for two months with a series of in-person events also being held across the city. The campaign launches today (January 26) and coming to an end on March 20.
