New zombie apocalypse workshop launched at Life Science Centre, Newcastle
19th June 2025

School groups visiting Life Science Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne can test if they have the skills to survive a zombie apocalypse in a new escape-room style workshop.
In Outbreak Z, students respond to news of a zombie disease outbreak through a series of science challenges and try to find a cure before time runs out!
The launch of Outbreak Z coincides with the highly anticipated release of the post-apocalyptic zombie thriller 28 Years Later, filmed almost entirely in the region, which has a gala screening in Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema tonight.
By simulating the high-stakes environment of a real-world disease outbreak, the new school workshop tailored for Key Stage 3 and older students, provides a hands-on learning experience that is as fun as it is educational.
Participants will collaborate in teams, tackling biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematical challenges while honing their problem-solving and teamwork skills.
It is the latest in Life’s engaging programme of curriculum-linked workshops, catering for pupils aged four to 18, which take place in fully equipped real labs.
Life Chief Executive Linda Conlon, said: “Life celebrates its 25th birthday this year and our latest schools’ workshop, Outbreak Z, is a great example of our hands-on approach to highlighting the real-life relevance of science in an entertaining way.
“Students get to explore the roles of scientists responding to global health crises, applying their scientific knowledge in a dynamic and engaging way.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for young learners to discover how science can impact the real world—and have a lot of fun in the process.”
Since opening in 2000, Life has supported teachers by delivering 50,000 educational experiences to school pupils each year that enhance and enrich the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) curriculum, providing experiences that are not usually possible to deliver in a classroom.
