Worldwide recruitment expertise now at the heart of Newcastle’s Biosphere

The world’s leading executive search firm in the HealthTech/BioTech market has established a presence at the heart of Newcastle’s life-sciences sector.

The US-headquartered firm The Mullings Group, established more than 30 years ago, now has its first European office having taken space at The Biosphere, which is based on Newcastle Helix.

Newcastle Helix is a 24-acre city centre development that brings together industry leaders, businesses, and top researchers into an internationally renowned innovation cluster. It’s from here that the company’s 30 plus years’ experience in unearthing the best talent in the medical device, life sciences and biotech sectors, will see them work with high-growth companies across the sector, whose products and services change the global standard of care.

Since opening late last year, the Mullings Group in Newcastle, which is fronted by north easterners, Tom Farr, and Michael Allport, has grown revenues from a standing start to seven figures and is already expanding with multiple internal hires over the course of 2022.

They’re excited to be a part of the life sciences community in the north east.

“Being from the North East, Michael and I are fully aware of the investment that is being made in life sciences in our region and beyond, whilst having first-hand appreciation of the significance this sector has to the future of the local economy,” explained Tom Farr.

“The speed at which the sector is growing in Newcastle and the region’s commitment to life sciences was a key factor in the Mullings Group deciding to establish a base in the city.”

As the world’s only talent access firm with a full in-house production studio and crew, The Mullings Group leverages the growth of the digital age in order to best articulate, narrate and bring to life their client’s stories.

“The Mullings Group is like no other search firm on the planet and with our award-winning, in-house production company, alongside our integral connections within the investment community, we fully immerse ourselves with our clients, so much so that we actually design and build an organisation’s hiring narrative from the ground up. To work so closely with companies who are literally changing the world, is incredibly rewarding,’’ said Michael Allport.

Luke Dunnett, Property Business Manager at The Biosphere, said:

“The Biosphere is now 90 per cent occupied and as we look to engage a private investor to take forward the next stage of its development, there will undoubtedly be a demand for quality talent within new and existing businesses. Having a worldwide recruitment business at the heart of The Biosphere will go a long way to helping bring the very best talent to the heart of Newcastle’s life sciences sector.”

Jen Hartley, Director of Invest Newcastle, part of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said:

“The health and life sciences sector in Newcastle has been in the spotlight like never before and The Biosphere has played a significant role in supporting talent and graduate retention in the region. The Mullings’ Group’s commitment to joining The Biosphere’s life science eco-system further cements the city’s global reputation as a leading location for businesses to grow and thrive and I am delighted that they are joining our dynamic community.”

The Biosphere is a purpose-built laboratory facility on Newcastle Helix dedicated to the commercialisation of life sciences. It has secured significant funding through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020 and the Government’s Local Growth Deal through the North East LEP.  Both funds help local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support innovation, businesses, create jobs and local community regenerations.
