New exhibit "Meet the River Giants" opens at Tynemouth Aquarium

Tynemouth Aquarium invite you to Meet the River Giants

Tynemouth Aquarium has opened a brand new exhibit and they are inviting you to meet their River Giants. The exhibit which opened in October 2019 is a new area to replace the otters, who moved to a farm in Ireland earlier this year.

These freshwater fish come from far away rivers such as the Amazon – so a far cry from what you would find in the Tyne, Wear or Tees! These giants can grow up to 130cm – the size of an average 9 year old! The new themed exhibit will take you away to a tropical rainforest, where you can experience the sights and sounds of a flooded forest.

Mark Sand from Tynemouth Aquarium said,

“We have been working hard behind the scenes to create our new exhibit and can’t wait to share it with our visitors. River Giants will see some of the biggest fish we have ever had at the Aquarium and visitors will be able to experience them up close.”

Visitors to the North East aquarium will be able to meet these River Giants from Saturday 19th October when they will also be able to check out the other new changes to Tynemouth Aquarium.

The development of the aquarium has seen new facilities, improvements to the appearance of the building as well as this new exhibit. There are more changes on the way too – with work to build a new cafe and shop area starting this week.
