Newcastle’s newest bar restaurant is bringing military precision to lunch time – with a 30-minute promise for diners on a deadline.
Colonel Porter’s Emporium, at Dean Street, has introduced a speedy service menu, which is available from Monday to Friday and is specifically aimed at office workers with set lunch hours.
Between 12 noon and 3pm they can choose a dish from the speedy lunch menu and a soft drink, tea or coffee for just £7.95 – and if it doesn’t arrive within 30 minutes, the restaurant picks up the bill.
Dishes on offer include a superfood salad of bulgar wheat, quinoa, soy beans, sugar snaps, tomato and mint with a soy and chilli dressing and the option to add either chicken or crab for a small surcharge.
There are also hot meals, in the shape of a cheeseburger with crispy onions, brioche bun and fries and fresh egg pasta fettucine, with a chestnut mushroom and Gruyère
cheese sauce.
The menu also offers a range of sandwiches, including roast chicken, smoked salmon, egg and cress, BLT and cheese and chutney – all of which are served with a house salad and fries.
Named after Newcastle Brown Ale creator, Colonel J Porter, the venues is styled like an Edwardian gentleman’s club – complete with Union Jack drapes, chandeliers and curiosities from around the globe.
Along with its speedy lunches, it serves main menu meals throughout the day – with a Chef’s Selection fixed price menu available from Monday to Saturday between 12 noon and 5.30pm.
Customers can choose two or three courses for either £10.95 or £13.95 respectively, with starters including whitebait and black pudding bhaji and main course dishes such as bangers and mash, macaroni cheese and chicken Caesar salad.
Chef’s Selection puddings include British classics such as apple and vanilla crumble and custard, sherry trifle and the restaurant’s signature rhum baba; a dense yeast cake, soaked in Old J Spiced Rum and served with Chantilly cream.
