Something for everyone in Sage Gateshead’s new classical season

A bumper, new classical season packed with popular music and film scores, alongside classical greats goes on sale at Sage Gateshead this weekend.

E.T. (December 1) and The Snowman (December 22 – 24) will all be shown on a large HD screen while Royal Northern Sinfonia (RNS) play the soundtrack live in the magnificent Sage One concert hall.

Ahead of Episode IX hitting the big screens this Christmas, RNS and the Chorus of RNS will bring ‘the force’ to Sage One on November 2 and 3 with a Star Wars Spectacular, performing John Williams’ scores from the whole saga so far.

Continuing the film theme, Hollywood Heroes on February 29 is a salute to the biggest and boldest heroes of the silver screen. RNS and maestro Stephen Bell pay tribute to Superman, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and more in this live, full symphonic concert.

The Music of Elton John will be performed on March 28, hot off the back of epic new biographical movie ‘Rocketman’ and celebrating 50 years of Sir Elton in the music business.

At Christmas The Great White Way comes to Sage Gateshead with musical hits that have put Broadway on the map. Christmas on Broadway will be performed on December 19 by RNS and four leading musical theatre soloists and will include hits from Guys and Dolls, West Side Story and The Sound of Music.

Embracing the change of decade will be ‘Welcome to the Roaring Twenties’, two RNS concerts exploring the wonderful music of the 1920s, featuring Walton’s Façade (January 10) and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (January 17).

There’s plenty for families with younger children too, with the orchestra’s popular Classics 4 Kids concerts on October 12 and February 8 and Baby Sinfonia concerts for tiny ones throughout the season.

The full classical season, which runs from September 2019 to June 2020 caters for all tastes, from a Big Beethoven Weekend (marking 250 years since his birth) to chart-topping violinist Nicola Benedetti, from Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.2 to minimalist music at Wylam Brewery.

General on sale tickets are available from Saturday June 15.
