Newcastle CAN!

Newcastle Can is a ground-breaking social experiment encouraging communities throughout the city to work together getting healthier and fitter.

One in three people in Britain are now overweight or obese, and if current trends continue by 2025, Britain is set to become the fattest country in Europe.

The campaign

Newcastle Can is on a mission to change that! Headed by chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and in collaboration with Newcastle City Council, Newcastle Can is getting the citizens of one city, acting together and supporting each other with the aim to create a new model for making a real impact on this seemingly intractable problem.

The ultimate goal is to see Newcastle lose a collective 100,000 lbs in one year! To date there are businesses and workplaces across the city, including call centres, taxi firms, the council and NHS all signed up. There are also individuals and groups of friends doing amazing things in their own communities.

Join the Movement

You can easily join the city-wide movement at www.newcastlecan.com and invite your friends, family and colleagues to join you. Everyone who signs up gets their own personal food intake diary and weight loss dashboard, lots of information about healthy eating and exercise, as well as details of upcoming events and local resources. There are also many teams on the website, including businesses, gyms and even neighbours – all working together and encouraging one another.

If we get this right, and reach or get close to our target, it will be a brilliant result for Newcastle. It could have a real and lasting effect on the overall health of the city. And if it works, it’s an idea that could be rolled out across Britain.
