Over one million passengers to pass through Newcastle Airport as school holidays get underway

With the school holidays almost underway, Newcastle International Airport prepares to welcome over one million passengers through its doors – with many travelling to all corners of the globe.

Over one million inbound and outbound passengers are expected to pass through the North East’s largest airport between 19th July and September 9th – in search of warmer climes.

With schools across the region closing their doors for the summer, along with the upcoming World Transplant Games, Great North Run, Sunderland Airshow and Northern Pride Festival – it is no surprise that it will be yet another busy season for airport staff.

The most popular international destinations for North East travellers this summer (2019) are the Spanish Costas, The Algarve, Turkey, Greece, and Dubai.

It is also expected that 120,000 passengers will connect through hub airports such as Heathrow, Amsterdam, Dubai and Paris to make their way on to far-flung destinations such as Thailand, Bali, Australia and the USA.

Next summer, travellers will also be able to use Munich as an addition connection hub – as Lufthansa are set to begin operating the new route from Newcastle in February 2020.

Thousands of customers are set to make use of the Airport’s brand new Premium Meet and Greet car parking facility – where passengers can simply drop their car off before heading straight into the terminal with ease.

The Airport’s dedicated Passengers Services team are set to assist over 5,000 passengers with reduced mobility – which is a 25% increase since 2018.

The “hidden disability” lanyard initiative, which was introduced last summer to aid passengers who need a little more time and assistance, is set to benefit around 600 children and adults over the Airport’s busiest period.

For the first summer ever, the Airport will also be inspiring tourists from abroad to visit the North East through its new inbound tourism initiative – named Visit North East England.

The inbound strategy will be encouraging passengers to visit the North East in time to catch some of the summer’s biggest events, including the highly-anticipated World Transplant Games.

The airport is also encouraging all passengers to be ‘travel aware’ before they set off for their trip – by advising them to carry only essential items in hand luggage and carefully pack all bags themselves.

Those still looking for some holiday inspiration can visit the airport’s ‘Discover the World’ website, www.newcastleairport.com/discover, a one-stop shop showcasing the full range of destinations accessible from Newcastle International.

They can also download the NCL Airport App – which includes destination guides, offers and bookable products.
