In April 2016, Government announced a competition for towns and cities to host the Great Exhibition of the North in 2018. The two-month exhibition – planned to take place in the summer of 2018 – will celebrate the best of art, culture and design across the North of England.
Led by a consortium of partners including NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, North East Cultural Partnership, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Sage Gateshead, the NewcastleGateshead bid puts the North’s inventive, innovative and trail blazing spirit at the forefront and has wide-ranging support from businesses and partners across the region, as showcased in the below video.
In the autumn of 2016, after shortlisting four cities in the North of England, a judging panel visited NewcastleGateshead to inspect its credentials as a host and later listened to a pitch from the bid team before announcing in November that we were successful in our bid to host the Great Exhibition of the North in the summer of 2018.
In a bid which celebrates the industrial, intellectual and digital revolution across the North of England – a region which continues to create and export life changing ideas and products across the world – we have curated three walking trails through NewcastleGateshead which will showcase the realms of art, design and innovation.
Not only do we have a proven track record in hosting major festivals and events, we also have an inspiring story to tell about our region; one that celebrates the great art, culture, design and innovation that defines the North of England today.
Great Exhibition of the North 2018 will be a significant opportunity to showcase work, develop new initiatives and create a lasting legacy not only for participants but also those inspired in the years afterwards.
